CORONA VIRUS- Help, Support & Advice

Family Support Team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital

Wirral University Teaching hospital (WUTH) has launched a Family Support Team to help patients and their families stay in contact with each other or provide emotional support to family members before and following a bereavement. The team of staff will be supporting relatives, offering updates about the hospital or sign posting to other areas externally, including current guidance on COVID-19 or relevant helplines.

The team will also be able to share messages to and from patients and their loved ones. They offer an email service contact, which includes the facility to print off keepsakes such as children’s drawings, photographs etc, telephone contact through our helplines. There is also a facility to record video messages to share with a patient from families and vice versa.

The service will be operating 7 days a week from 8.30am – 5.00pm.

Losing a loved one is traumatic at any time but experiencing a bereavement during the current crisis is incredibly difficult for people. Age UK Wirral have launched a new Bereavement Support Service that is available to provide help and assistance to people with all of the necessary arrangements in dealing with people’s affairs.

  • Health at home – is a webpage that gives an overview of NHS services that are available, such as how to order repeat prescriptions online and get them delivered.

  • Public Health England has provided some guidance on looking after mental health and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Local councils are working with voluntary sector organisations and local communities to support residents in the response to COVID-19. Click the following link to this website to find out more information.

Local services available

Do you need support from a NHS Volunteer Responder?

NHS Volunteer Responders have been set up to help support vulnerable individuals who are self-isolating.

Priority will be given to those identified as most at risk from COVID-19 and asked to self-isolate at home for an extended period, and to those who health practitioners and local authorities consider to be vulnerable.

The volunteer initiative is being delivered by NHS England and NHS Improvement in partnership with Royal Voluntary Service and enabled by the GoodSam Responders app.

High risk patients can call directly themselves on 0808 196 3382 or speak to one of us at the surgery to find out more.

Volunteers can provide:

    • Check in and chat support – short-term telephone support to individuals who are at risk of loneliness because of self-isolation (note, this is not mental health advice).
    • Community support – collection of shopping, medication, or other essential supplies for someone who is self-isolating, and delivering these supplies to their home.
    • Patient Transport – transport to take patients home who are medically fit for discharge.
    • NHS Transport – who will deliver medicines on behalf of the community pharmacy or dispensing doctor.
